The Chinese word for four (四, pinyin: sì, jyutping: sei 3), sounds quite similar to the word for death (死, pinyin: sǐ, jyutping: sei 2), in many varieties of Chinese. It is a superstition most common in East Asian nations. Tetraphobia (from Greek τετράς- tetras, 'four' and φόβος- phobos, 'fear' ) is the practice of avoiding instances of the digit 4. Note that there is a 'negative first' floor. Floor 14 is missing because 4 is included in 14. Floor 13 is missing due to triskaidekaphobia. Floor 4 is missing because of the very similar pronunciation of 'four' and 'death' in Mandarin Chinese. Korean forms are used for the number of items from 1 to 60 and age.Īn elevator control panel in a residential apartment building in Shanghai with floor numbers 4, 13 and 14 missing. So books, people, trees, and any number of objects also use the Korean numbers. However, most objects are counted using the Korean system unless the counting involves money. So, for example, the word 10 might be spoken using two entirely different words depending on what’s being counted.

Remember: Koreans use both systems depending on the situation. Thus, the Roman alphabet spellings of the words vary from site-to-site and are phonetic. Korean numbers are written using symbols that are called “Hangul” and are not written using the Roman alphabet. In most cases, if you are simply counting from 1 to 10 (and are not using money or other special cases), you will want to use the Korean system (this is also true in Taekwondo). In Korean, you will encounter two completely different sets of words for numbers, one based on Korean words and one related to Chinese (this system is sometimes called Sino-Korean).
